Art in the Time of COVID19: Adult
Little Dancer (Katja Telp)
5.2" x 3.3". Paper, wood, acrylic paint, colored ink, glass beads, thread, resin. 4/1/2020
A couple of months ago I took a resin class, and have been experimenting with epoxy resin since. The result is a series of small embroidered family photographs which I then mount on a wooden panel and encase in resin.
In this case, I chose a blurry picture (the blurriness gives it an atmospheric quality), painted the background, and hand stitched glass beads onto the paper before pouring the resin.

As an art restorer for gilded/painted wooden sculptures (European religious sculptures, altar pieces etc. from the Gothic to the Baroque Period) I pay close attention to detail in my work. I enjoy experimenting with a wide range of materials and tools and like to combine all sorts of techniques.

2.5" x 2.5". Teabag, Micron marker, colored ink. 4/15/2019
This piece is part of a series of teabag portraits I painted last year. It started with a few test studies and turned into a full blown operation - which teabags have the finest grain, which tea should they be steeped in to prepare for crisp lines, etc. I collected vintage photos of people with interesting faces, including children and old people, to paint onto the teabags. This portrait is the only one that doesn't feature a dried flower.

56" x 67". Photograph. 3/29/2020
I stumbled upon Giovanna Garzoni’s “ Canina con biscotti” (1648) while idly scrolling through Instagram. The dog’s face pleased me so much that I decided to spend my time stuck at home recreating the painting with my own dog, Lady Bella, as the subject. All props were found within my house, and the loaf of bread is home-baked.

We are both in Architecture and enjoy making art and objects in our free time.cat from cat (Di Xu)
13mm x 33mm. Cat hair, acrylic paint. 3/31/2020
This felt sculpture was made during the COVID19 pandemic, when arts and crafts are gaining popularity as socially-distanced people attempt to retain their sanity. The hair used in the sculpture was sourced from a tabby cat. The loss of hair is usually associated with stress and anxiety, but by shedding the hair, reinterpreting it, and reconstructing it to be observed from afar, one can become renewed.

22" x 22". Oil on Paper. 3/2020
My current series is created by working with an AI network that produces pictures as an attempt to emulate human-made images. I fine-tune their creations, then recreate them as closely as possible, using traditional painting methods. I selected this image to work on during our new isolation period because it complements the times. Like the ups and downs that we are experiencing, it can be taken in two ways; as lively, organic and vibrant- but also messy, twisting, and somewhat menacing. It feels like a virus and a host all at once. It describes something unknown and yet familiar- the AI made an image that nurtures as well as frightens.

Random shot on the occasion of my son's middle school graduation ceremony - a girl had lost the balloon and it made its way into the cloudless blue sky as if to say it's there for everybody.

4" x 6". Watercolor on watercolor paper. 03/26/2020
This is my attempt at painting a snapshot of the virus from an NPR article. I knew that I wanted to paint it but I haven’t touched watercolors in a long time. When I saw the call for submissions I figured I should take the chance to step out of my comfort zone!
